Mouthguards

Mouthguards play an extremely important part in your dental care and can prevent damage to your teeth if you grind your teeth at night or play sports. Accidents can happen particularly during contact sports, and mouth guards can help limit injuries to your lips, tongue, and soft tissues of your mouth and can also help avoid chipped or broken teeth, nerve damage, and even tooth loss.

There are several types of mouthguards available, including stock (ready-made), mouth-formed (boil and bite), and fully custom mouth guards. At Solstice Smiles Dental, we recommend and encourage the use of custom mouthguards as they reduce the risk of dental injuries the most effectively.

Usually, mouthguards are worn on the upper jaw, but if you have any dental devices such as veneers, retainers, bridgework, or dentures, we can create custom mouth guards for your lower jaw. If you have traditional braces or Invisalign, you are still a candidate for a custom mouth guard, in fact, it’s highly recommended to protect your teeth from moving due to any impact from grinding (bruxism) or from sports injuries.

Mouthguards can also be used to help alleviate issues relating to TMD / TMJ, sleep apnea, and even snoring. Please consult with Dr. Fitz to discuss if a mouth guard could be right for you.
