April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to educating patients about one of the most serious, but often preventable, oral health conditions. At Solstice Smiles Dental, we believe awareness and early detection can truly save lives.

Why Oral Cancer Awareness Matters

Oral cancer is more common than many people realize. In the United States alone, over 60,000 new cases of oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer are expected annually, with more than 13,000 deaths each year.

What makes oral cancer especially dangerous is that it often goes unnoticed until it reaches an advanced stage. In fact, many cases are diagnosed late, which significantly lowers survival rates.

The good news? When detected early, oral cancer is highly treatable.

What Is Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer refers to cancers that develop in the mouth or throat, including the:

  • Tongue

  • Gums

  • Lips

  • Floor of the mouth

  • Roof of the mouth

  • Tonsils and throat

These cancers can affect anyone, and while they are more common in adults over 60, cases in younger individuals are increasing—often linked to HPV (human papillomavirus).

Common Signs and Symptoms

Oral cancer can be subtle in its early stages. Be aware of these warning signs:

  • A sore that doesn’t heal after 2–3 weeks

  • Red or white patches in the mouth

  • Lumps or thickened areas

  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing

  • Persistent sore throat or hoarseness

  • Numbness or pain in the mouth or lips

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to schedule a dental exam promptly.

Risk Factors to Know

Understanding your risk is key to prevention. Major risk factors include:

  • Tobacco use (smoking or chewing)

  • Heavy alcohol consumption

  • HPV infection

  • Excessive sun exposure (especially for lip cancer)

  • Poor oral hygiene

Today, one of the fastest-growing groups affected by oral cancer includes younger, non-smoking individuals due to HPV-related cancers.

The Importance of Oral Cancer Screenings

An oral cancer screening is quick, painless, and part of your routine dental exam.

During your visit, your dentist will:

  • Examine your mouth, tongue, and throat

  • Check for unusual lesions or discoloration

  • Feel for lumps in the jaw and neck

These screenings are critical because early detection dramatically improves survival rates, with localized cancers having much higher treatment success.

At Solstice Smiles Dental, your health goes beyond your smile. Our team is trained to identify early warning signs and guide you through next steps if anything unusual is detected.

Take Action This April

Oral Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect reminder to prioritize your health. Join our team on Saturday, April 25th at 9am for the DMV Oral Cancer Walk / 5k 2026. This is a wonderful community event to help raise funds and awareness for Oral Cancer.

If it’s been more than six months since your last dental visit, now is the time to schedule an appointment!
